Author Bio:
J.L. Sheppard was born and raised in Miami, Florida where she still lives with her husband and son.
As a child, her greatest aspiration was to become a writer. She read often, kept a journal and wrote countless poems. She attended Florida International University and graduated in 2008 with a Bachelors in Communications. During her senior year, she interned at NBC Miami, WTVJ. Following the internship, she was hired and worked in the News Department for three years.
It wasn’t until 2011 that she set her heart and mind into writing her first completed novel, Demon King’s Desire, which was published in January of 2013.
Besides reading and writing, she enjoys traveling and spending quality time with family and friends.
What inspires you to write?
Everything inspires me. Or I should say, everything has the ability to: music, television shows, movies, and sometimes, even dreams.
Tell us about your writing process.
I’m a seat-of-the-pants writer. 😉 And proud of it. Sometimes, this means I have to edit, a lot, but what is writing without editing?
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Of course, I listen and talk to my characters. I create scenarios then put myself in their shoes, and do and say what they would.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have a lot of favorites. To name a few: Kresley Cole, Jeannine Frost, Nicholas Sparks, Kristen Ashley, and Alexandra Ivy.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
It was always a dream of mine to write a book. Published or not. It was hard, but I decided to go for it. That in itself was a big step. I wrote my first book, Demon King’s Desire, in a year, and after the hard work of completing a full-length novel, to me, there was no choice but to start sending it to publishers. I wanted to get published, and I knew I’d never get that if I didn’t try. I got plenty of denials, but one company, Cobblestone Press, an e-book publisher, gave me a chance to publish. I did. After I wrote my second book, Burdened by Desire, which is the second in the series, Elemental Sisters, I sent it out to several publishers and heard back from the Wild Rose Press. They gave me the chance to not only publish my book in e-format but print. Since then, I’ve continued publishing with the Wild Rose Press.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
As long as people continue to love books, publishing will continue. It’s harder now, I think, to “make it big,” since there’s a lot of self-publishing, a lot of books, a lot of writers who want to write, print, and sell, but I think at the end of the day, “making it big” is a lot about hard work and luck. Luck because there’s a lot of amazing writers, no one knows about.
