Author Bio:
My name is Gail Daley and for most of my life I have been an erratic writer of women’s fiction both historical and science fiction/fantasy, and a self-taught artist who paints in Acrylics. I have a background in business; I worked at the IRS for many years and when I retired, I took over the office management of my husband’s pool service company. After a few unsatisfactory (and expensive!) attempts at using professional promoters, I began doing my own promoting and marketing of both my art and for my husband, developing our own advertisements and brochures. I have created and published my own web site.
What inspires you to write?
Although I have sporadically begun many novels during my lifetime, none of them was ever finished. I was recently inspired to finish several novels I started in my twenties, by my son, Andrew Daley, who is also a writer.
Tell us about your writing process.
That is difficult to answer because I do all of those things. I do usually write out an outline of the story, but once the outline is done, I also write by the seat of my pants, sometimes changing the outline to fit how the character reacts to a situation I created. I suppose you could say I use a form of character sketches in the beginning, but once I start writing about a character, they seem to come to life on their own.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I suppose in a way I listen to my characters, because I try and put myself in that characters place when I am writing a scene in my head.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite author—there are so many. My favorite historical author is Roberta Gellis; I do like her Roselynde series best. My favorite Romance / Sci Fi Author is Jayne Ann Krenze aka Jayne Castle and I really like her new Rainshadow Series. For just straight Sci-Fi it will have to be Andre Norton (any book at all). For good old-fashioned adventure, my favorite is Alistair MacLean and my favorite of all his books is When Eight Bells Toll, because I loved the characters snarky comments at his own expense while he was performing James Bond Type feats. Since I got an I-Pad and was introduced to Kindle I am really enjoying Amanda M Lee’s witches of the northeast series. I could go on, but you get the picture.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
You can’t really say you are an author unless you are published. As to why I went the self-published route, the answer is pretty simple. As I understand it most hard copy publishers like Random House won’t even look at your work without an agent. I don’t know any agents or how to work with them, and truthfully I had some bad experiences with agents as an artist.
