What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
While visiting with daughter and son-in-law in their home in a large retirement community, my son-in-law disappeared for a while. Daughter said, "He's taking care of his trash harem." When she told me what he was doing, I knew I had to write a mystery with a trash harem. And of course, I wanted to use the enviornment of a retirement community. The one in the book is fictional. I love Temecula and all the wineries plus the fact that the famous mystery writer Erle Stanley Gardner once lived in the area and had a great time doing the research for the book. And of course, since it's a Tempe Crabtree mystery, I included a bit about the Pechanga Indians.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Since this is a long standing series, Tempe, who is Native American, and her pastor husband Hutch are as real to me as any of my friends. I first came up with her when I met a lovely Indian woman who lives on the nearby reservation, a female deputy I wrote an article about for our local newspaper, and a female police officer I did a grave yard shift ride-along with. Tempe is a combination of all three. As for the people who live in the fictional retirement community, they like many characters in my book, just seem to pop into my imagination.
