What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I have a weekend home on the river that I inherited from my father over twenty years ago. During that time, I have observed wetlands being destroyed along the river. I wanted to write a book to raise awareness that many aquatic plants are protected– and provide habitat for the nursery of life along rivers– to make future generations understand the importance of protecting wetlands. I decided to tell the story through the eyes of a nine-year-old girl, and heroine for the environment, who can interpret the language of the animals that live in the wetlands. Nobody knows the stories of the animals like Pippin!

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
My husband and I have spent many years kayaking the rivers of Florida, so I envisioned a family that owned a kayaking business for the main characters. We are both veterinarians, so I included lots of fun facts about animals and nature. The main character, Pippin, is a nine-year-old girl with a superpower to interpret animal languages and a strong desire to protect her beloved river. Pippin's best friend defends her when some children make fun of her for not fitting in with their plans for parties and gossip. According to some people, Pippin is most like me.
