Author Bio:
Colette Tozer lives in Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey, with her amazing husband, Rodney and spoiled Chiweenie, Nala.
Colette has a passion for writing (and coffee) that has guided her all throughout her life. She loves all kinds of stories and coffee, with a strict persuasion towards hazelnut coffee. Both passions have fueled her fervent desire to flourish into the cornerstone of her career. After formulating a story for over a decade, she finally released her debut novel, Family Tithes along with the formation of her production company; Serial Writer Productions.
When Colette is not writing, she reads, obsesses over (and rants about) her favorite television series, bakes tasty treats and sings along (terribly) to her favorite songs.
What inspires you to write?
I started writing when I was ten years old. I have always been fascinated by stories. So, when I got old enough to be somewhat coherent in my writing, I started creating my own stories. They were terrible, but they were mine. I wanted to be an author before I even knew it was an occupation.
My mom explained that you could get paid for writing books and I was thrilled. My dream just got better.
Seventeen years later, writing has become the cornerstone of my career. I still love it as much as the first time I set pen to paper and I couldn't imagine doing anything else.
Tell us about your writing process.
My writing process is random. There’s no true formula I follow when I’m writing my own books. Inspiration can hit me anywhere. I was at an amusement park a little while ago and randomly started thinking about an issue I had with a book.
When I get this kind of inspiration, though, I must write it down. I can’t wait, or I will forget. I must be in the moment when writing, at least initially.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Yes. I listen to and talk to my characters all the time. Often, it feels as though they are the ones telling the story and I am just the conduit.
Who are your favorite authors?
Currently, my favorite author is Lisa Jackson, but my all-time favorite author is Sandra Brown. I also enjoy paranormal books and Rob Thurman is my favorite author in that genre.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
The publication process was a long journey for me. There were a lot of ups and downs. However, after working in the writing world for all of my adult life, I knew I could successfully publish and promote my books myself.
Therefore, I started my company, Serial Writer Productions and focused on honing my publishing skills.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I believe that indie-publishing and self-publishing will continue to flourish. Everyone has a story to tell. I think it is great that authors can get those stories to readers who appreciate them without having to impress anyone other than their audience.
