Author Bio:
My name is Camille Cabrera and over the years my love for travel turned into an ache too difficult to leave alone for long. My first visit to Santa Catalina Island ultimately inspired me to write Catalina’s Tide. I still remember how strange it felt to see bison walking on the beach as I curiously peeked outside of my tent. The mystery and that I magic felt on that memorable trip ended up being the perfect catalyst for my most recent novella.
What inspires you to write?
I am most inspired to write when left alone in nature. My best writing usually comes to me when I am at the beach or sitting alone on a park bench. My life experiences and daily interactions with people help to influence what I write.
Tell us about your writing process.
I am most definitely a pants writer. Although I do have small outlines and major plot events in mind when writing I usually let the book have a life of its own. That means that I focus much more on how each character would react to a situation and think about each interaction instead of trying to keep pushing ahead.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
With my characters I feel that my approach is much more of a listener. I try and understand who they are to their very core and then try to listen and understand how they would react to a given situation.
Who are your favorite authors?
I absolutely adore Agatha Christie and William Shakespeare. Books that make me think and have complicated characters really motivate me to keep turning the page. I am currently rereading And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to self-publish to start my career. The choice was mostly based on the idea that I needed to start sharing my work and that the best person to care about sharing my work… is me. In the future I would love to work with a publisher, but I just really wanted to get the ball rolling and see where writing can take me.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I love that book publishing is becoming much more open and competitive. It feels similar to how the music industry was made more public thanks to Youtube and other streaming apps are helping everyday people get discovered. With new technology comes the ability for talented writers who might not have had a chance to shine in the old system to get discovered in this new one.
