What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
After writing an adult epic fantasy series, I discovered that a lot of young but voracious readers were disappointed that my series wasn't appropriate for them. So I decided to try my hand at a series suitable for ages 13 and older. Hence, "Dark Circles" was born. I've been pleasantly surprised how much fun I've had writing book 1 ("Do You Believe in Magic?") and book 2 ("Do You Believe in Monsters"). Book 2 will debut in October 2023. And then it's on to book 3!
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
My main character Charlie is a nerdy 13-year-old boy. On the outside, he's on the skinny side and is often picked on by bullies. But on the inside, his courage and resolve dwarf anything a bully brings to the table. Charlie has white-blond hair and blue eyes, which symbolizes wisdom and purity. It's no coincidence that when I was 13, I had white-blond hair and was a bit skinny. Zola, who is my MC2, was adopted from Thailand. My wife and I adopted three girls from Cambodia about 20 years ago, which helped to inspire the Zola character.
