What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
“Write what you know,” they said.
I was on my third marriage. I wrote romances for Harlequin/Silhouette.
Fast forward ten years.
“Write what you know,” they said.
I’d been divorced three times. Obviously I knew nothing about romance. However, I am obsessed with chocolate, and I have often fantasized about murdering my ex. So…Death by Chocolate!
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Fred was the first character who came to mind. I had reconnected with a friend from high school. We became great friends. But one day I realized I knew absolutely nothing about him and what he'd been doing all those intervening years. And Fred was born. Was my friend a spy? A computer hacker? Who knows! Maybe!
King Henry came to the pages because I had recently lost my cat, Leo. He lives again every time I write a new book. All the "cat" things King Henry does come straight from my memories of Leo.
I wanted a female protagonist. I named her Lindsay because I had recently lost a friend named Lynda. Her character evolved as I began to write the pages. Some people say she sounds a lot like me. Well, that isn't surprising since I write her dialogue!
Paula also evolved as I wrote her character. She is very much like my best friend who is a quiet, calming, strong force in my life.
Then I needed an ex-husband I could torment. However, the only thing Rick has in common with my ex is that he's a liar and a cheat and doesn't want to lose his possession. Rick is actually much more charming than my ex!
