What inspires you to write?
I have always been a creative person at heart. Of course, that means that I love creating things! Writing is one of several artistic and imaginative passions that nourishes my urge to create. The inspiration can come from just about anything. It could be something as simple as an interesting word that pops into my head or that I hear on the radio and, somehow, that single word blossoms into an idea for a story that I can’t wait to start writing! My inspiration to write usually comes from my thought process, but it’s also often evident in my senses. It might come from something I hear, see, feel, smell or even taste. A few months ago, I felt the gentle warmth on my shoulder from a ray of sunshine that was peeking through the window on a cold wintry day. It was a beautiful sensation that inspired me to write about it; it became the first line of my next literary exploit!
Tell us about your writing process.
It depends on what I’m writing. If it’s non-fiction, my process is very heavily research-driven. I approach non-fiction much like a scientist; develop a hypothesis, do the research and, if supported substantially, build the hypothesis into a very structured and logical outline. However, as I write, my own personality, unique perspectives and creative way of thinking infuse my own voice into that work of non-fiction. The result is very much a personal, expressive and human book, rather than the impersonal research from which it sprung.
When I write fiction, my process is entirely different! I am far more about exploring my ideas and feelings as I write fiction. I’m not nearly as structured in my approach and leave ample room to stray from my basic idea as the story takes me in, sometimes, unanticipated directions. I guess that’s a lot like life. The twists and turns that we don’t see coming have a parallel in writing.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Of course I converse with my characters! How else would I know who they really are? I also love the process of writing dialogue. I'm often surprised as a certain character says this or that; As I type, I really didn't see it coming! When that happens – and it happens often – I'm thrilled by the experience. I can hear my characters speak in their own voices as my fingers tap away. They often surprise me by saying something unexpected – sometimes even startling. But, it's often completely perfect for the moment and I'll blurt out something like, "Awesome" or "That's perfect!" (It's actually pretty funny when my wife is nearby and responds, thinking that I'm conversing with her!)
Who are your favorite authors?
Full disclosure, I write far more than I read. When I'm still awake far later than I should be and bed is calling, I'm more likely at the keyboard than reading. However, I'm pretty eclectic when it comes to who I read. Deepak Chopra and the late Thomas Merton are a few of my favorite authors; obviously with a very spiritual bent. Dr. Wayne Dyer was a truly inspiration speaker and writer, and his books often nourish me when I need a push. I recently read Atomic Habits by James Clear and found his writing to be practical and helpful. However, those are all in the same type of camp. Nicholas Kristof (yes, a familiar name..!) keeps me engaged when I want a political fix. But for fiction, I really love reading Mitch Albom!
What genres do you write?
Fiction: Romance, Adventure, Fantasy, Mystery, Crime, Paranormal (ie. Time Travel), and Feel-Good Nostalgia/HEA……Non-Fiction: Emotional Health, Spiritual Connections
How did you choose the genre(s) you write?
I don't really choose them; they choose me. I know that sounds a bit trite and possibly even arrogant, but I am being honest. I get inspired to write something and, regardless what genre, and I'm off and running with it!
What three things are on your writing desk at any given moment?
Computer/Keyboard (of course, but beyond that:)
Pens, Paper, Phone
What hobbies do you have when you need a break from writing?
I love composing artistic images; art photography has long been one of my creative passions. I also don't mind getting soil up to my elbows as I tend to my many gardens and landscaping; planting seeds and harvesting food, and appreciating the beauty in plants makes me feel at peace and connected to our Earth. There's also something spiritual about it for me. Of course, celebrating life with family and friends is a constant and necessary part of my life when I'm not writing. My wife and I love to entertain and socialize! Beyond all of that, I will rarely turn-down an opportunity to enjoy a sandy beach and warm, salty breezes!
