Simi K. Rao was born in India and has been living in the United States for several years. Her contemporary romance novel An Incurable Insanity, published by Tate Publishing, will be released on October 8, 2013. An Incurable Insanity is her first foray into writing. The inspiration for the story came from what she has seen transpire among and within the immigrant community. Some of the experiences included are her own; some have been garnered from friends and casual conversations with acquaintances. She also writes poetry, is an avid photographer, loves to travel, and is a practicing physician. She currently lives in Denver with her family.
What inspires you to write?
Life, music, nature. Everything I see around inspires me.
Tell us about your writing process.
I’m a very spontaneous, off the cuff writer. I don’t usually employ an outline nor do I use a storyboard. I start with an idea or a theme and construct around it. As for my characters; they are the life and soul of my stories, hence they are well defined before I start writing.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
We have a dialogue.
What advice would you give other writers?
Develop your own voice and write with heart.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I didn’t start writing my story with the intention to publish. It happened after I saw the response I got when I shared it on my blog. It was tremendous and some readers connected deeply with it. My blog was a testing ground for me and I encourage new authors to consider blogging too.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
The future is in self publishing, because there are several voices out there just waiting to he heard and they cannot be suppressed.
