What inspires you to write?
I want to tell stories that interest me. My hope is that if I find the story remotely interesting others will too.
Tell us about your writing process.
I'm up every morning at 5am. I make a cup of coffee, sit in the dark and write for an hour or two before I leave for my day job as a high school English teacher. Occasionally, after school I review what I wrote in the morning. The bulk of my writing is accomplished on the weekends when I'm able to devote more time to the craft.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I try to listen to all of my characters with an intent ear. They dictate want they want to say to me. I'm just the facilitator.
Who are your favorite authors?
I don't have favorite authors. I have favorite books, plays and poems. Here is a partial list: Beckett, Baldwin, Kafka, Delillo, Hughes, Carver, Orwell, Woolf, Ionesco, Whitman, Joyce, Murakami, Kerouac, Rich, Fitzgerald, Sartre, Camus, Frost, Yeats, Merwin, Albee, Pinter, Vuong, Eliot, Morrison, Ishiguro, Stroudt, and Kesey.
