Author Bio:
Richard Dietrich Maddox grew up in the Midwest and graduated with honors from Princeton University. After graduation, he spent five years in Europe studying literature and preparing to teach meditation. He taught meditation full-time for two years before serving as the Vice President of Sales for seven successful high-tech startup companies. In 2005, he retired from the business world to concentrate on writing. He is the author of the number-one Amazon-bestselling Enlightenment novels, “Remembering Eternity,” “The Whisper of a Saint,” “Enlightened Relations: The Life in a Day,” “The Enlightenment of Joshua Inly,” and “Lucinda,” all of which have been highly acclaimed by readers.
What inspires you to write?
My mission is to spread the word about Enlightenment, as the Enlightened Masters have taught it, in the form of fiction. I delight in entertaining my readers, while also illustrating spiritual truths.
Tell us about your writing process.
I "dream" my books as I write, allowing the material to flow, based on an initial conception of the overall structure of the book. I write early in the day, when I am freshest, and after meditation, when my creativity is highest.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I feel the presence of my characters and hear their dialogue in my head. I don't, however, talk back to them.
Who are your favorite authors?
Tolstoy: "War and Peace"
Proust: "In Search of Lost Time"
Thomas Mann: "The Magic Mountain"
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I did not want to suffer the delays and possible roadblocks of traditional publishing. As my market is a niche one, I considered self-publishing to be the optimal route.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Amazon rules.
What genres do you write?
literary fiction, spiritual fiction, women's fiction, young adult, religious/inspirational
