Polly Letofsky Author Bio:
Polly Letofsky spent five years walking around the world, and six years writing the book about it. But it was worth it, her long awaited first book, 3mph: The Adventures of One Woman’s Walk Around the World has won top honors at the 2011 IPPY Awards as Best Travel Memoir, Best Memoir at the 2011 Writer’s Digest Best Book Awards, and was a Finalist in the USA Book Awards.
You can invite Polly to your book club! Polly has made a unique offer to readers of 3mph. If your book club reads 3mph she would be honored to visit your book club as well! She can visit by Zoom, or if you’re in the Denver metro area the club usually has a pot luck of the foods represented in her book. (She tended to talk about food a lot…), and sure, maybe some of the wines of the various countries as well.
Polly’s GlobalWalk — The Documentary has been produced by Newcastle Productions, currently showing on PBS channels across the United States (and available on Amazon).
After a horrible experience publishing her book, 3mph: The Adventures of One Woman’s Walk Around the World, she started her own publishing company, My Word Publishing, where her team of 15 Publishing Consultants help authors through the maze of self-publishing — all while they keep 100% of their rights and royalties. She was awarded Best Woman Owned Business by the Colorado Business Women.
She currently lives in Denver where she continues to work hard on behalf of authors, and is also a motivational speaker, teaching the lessons she learned on the road. She loves biking, her cats, and still walks.
What inspires you to write?
My favorite thing to do is sit in a cafe with the white noise of people around me, and just do a stream of consciousness writing spree. When you do no editing in your head and just go go go without stopping, your mind has the freedom to go anywhere. Some of the best lines in my book came from a writing sprint.
Tell us about your writing process.
I'm a seat of the pants writer. To be fair though, I'm not writing fiction with multiple plots lines that have to run parallel. Writing non-fiction memoir, I felt like I had to be a razor sharp observer of people's movements and psyche, even language and dialog.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite author is Frank McCourt of Angela's Ashes and 'Tis. Lord knows how he ever got an editor that understood him — but very grateful that they let Frank be Frank as it brough us all a new way of storytelling and writing style. And heck, it was a Pulitzer Prize winner, so thankfully he got an editor that understood his unique voice.
What genres do you write?
Memoir
How did you choose the genre(s) you write?
My book is a memoir, so I guess we can say the genre chose me.
What three things are on your writing desk at any given moment?
1. A pile of scratch paper — as I'm a doodler.
2. Even though I have a two-screen computer, I have pens thrown about the place.
3. A doll I crafted, who is my target audience. Her name is Sally.
What hobbies do you have when you need a break from writing?
My main hobbies outside of writing are walking, trying new restaurants with friends, and biking. My best ideas coming from a good walk or bike ride.
What formats are your books in?
