What inspires you to write?
My story. My son's early failure and his amazing success drives me. I want parents and teachers to know that we can and must teach children to read.
Tell us about your writing process.
I write and write. As an un-diagnosed dyslexic person, I arrived to writing with significant difficulties and very little confidence. Enrolling in writing classes where I engaged with a young editor, Zan Strumfeld, changed my writing life. Her editorial style of encouragement, modelling and positive support gave me confidence in writing.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Even writing non-fiction, my characters live with me. Writing takes "think" time and I talk and listen to my characters.
Who are your favorite authors?
Bill Bryson, Lois Lawry, Diane Diamond, Ruth Park, Brian Jacques, Bruce Coville.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I attend one writers conferences and met with a number of young literary agents. One person was interested in my story. After 6 weeks of waiting, I checked out "hybrid publishing." Within 24 hour Acorn Publication said they loved my manuscript – and the owner edited the first 4 pages. Her edits were just astounding. I published with Acorn.

So many people have many stories to tell. Many will publish and its a whole new world of marketing.
