Kylee Jean Marshall is a writer, public speaker, and recovering perfectionist. Of Dirt and Wildflowers is her first published book. She was born and raised on a sheep ranch in rural western Colorado and now lives in Grand Junction, CO with her husband, Travis, their children—Rylee, Candon, and Max, a golden retriever, Winston, and their black cat, George. Her mission is to inspire audiences by encouraging them to dig into the dirt of their lives to curate the courage to bloom.
What inspires you to write?
I have always had an internal need to write. As a way to process thoughts that were too big or too scary to let be heard, I wrote. Writing has healed me; it has taken me to places I needed to go. It has brought me back to myself. I am inspired to write because I know that the written and spoken word has healing powers — I write to inspire and heal others. The human experience is beautiful, and words helps us all connect.
Tell us about your writing process.
I am a non-fiction writer, so my writing is based on life. As life happens, I often find myself stopping to jot down notes into my phone. Before technology, I wouldn't be found without my notebook. Oftentimes, still, I am journaling and jotting down thoughts. My thoughts often come out as descriptive sentences or as metaphors and analogies. My brain works in making visual connections.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I am not a fiction writer, but I still find myself interacting with my characters. I want to hear their voices and see their mannerisms, so I go back to very specific moments in time when emotions were high (happiness, sadness, anger) and pull intricate details from those moments.
Who are your favorite authors?
Kristin Hannah — Firefly Lane, The Great Alone, The Nightingale
Brene Brown — Daring Greatly, Braving the Wilderness
Shauna Niequist — Present Over Perfect, I Guess I Haven't Learned that Yet
What genres do you write?
Non-Fiction, Memoir, Inspirational, Self-Help
How did you choose the genre(s) you write?
I don't know that I chose the non-fiction memoir genre as much as it chose me. I think there is a need for writers to tell their stories and to inspire others. Reading memoirs has always led me on a personal voyage, and I wanted to do the same for others. I truly believe we all have a story to tell.
What three things are on your writing desk at any given moment?
My little lamp — I love a soft yellow glow.
My typewriter keyboard — I love the feel and sound of a typewriter.
A candle — I love engaging all 5 senses when I write.
What hobbies do you have when you need a break from writing?
Nature is my hobby — before I write, while I write, after I write — I can be found outside hiking, running, biking, or skiing. I crave sunshine, the smell of rain, blooming wildflowers, and cloud dancing across the sky. I have been blessed to grow up and live in Western Colorado where nature surrounds me.
