Author Bio:
Proud author of a number of fantasy and thrillers, fascinated by the dark and macabre. Stephen King is her all time inspiration mixed in with a little bit of Eminem. When she began writing, she started in horror but it somehow drifted into thriller. She loves the 1988 movie Heathers. She was born and raised in Michigan but traveled across the country to where she currently resides in Texas.
What inspires you to write?
I draw my inspiration from a number of sources including music, pictures, and dreams. I think the number one way that I gain inspiration is by seeing pictures on various social media accounts. It doesn't really matter what the content of the pictures are. If they're striking enough, my brain tries to create a backstory for them and sometimes that develops into an entire novel.
Tell us about your writing process.
My writing process is actually quite complicated. When I begin a new project, I first write it all down in a spiral college-ruled notebook with a fountain pen. Pen on paper helps me gather my thoughts better than writing on a computer. After I finish my first draft in the notebook, I transfer all the writing to loose-leaf paper that I keep in a binder. After this draft is when I finally type it on the computer and look for things such as plot holes or areas where characters need development.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Depends on which series I'm working on. For some of them, such as my Rituals series, the characters are more vocal. However, in others, like my Witch's Ambitions series, I have to prod my characters a bit.
Who are your favorite authors?
This is a tough question. I've expanded my reading horizons, and I adore so many authors. I'll give my top six: Stephen King, Lynn Weingarten, Caroline Kepnes, Ruth Ware, Mary Kubica, and Kevin O'Brien.
These authors all have a handful of wonderful books, however, I will single out Lynn Weingarten because her book "Bad Girls with Perfect Faces" is my absolute favorite book. I must've listened to the audio version 100+ times.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I eventually came to the conclusion of self-publishing after the small publishing company (RRPI) that picked up my debut novel closed its doors. While I was contracted under them, it seemed that I faced nothing but frustration and alot of other authors that had a contract with them felt the same way. I like the freedom of self-publishing because I can decide every aspect of what happens with my work. I can find an editor that I want to work with, find a cover that I like, and promote in whatever way I feel best suits me and my work.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think the book world is making a comeback. I've read quite a few articles that have said hardcopies of books are on the rise again, and I think there will be more and more opportunities for indie authors/self-publishers to find real chances to get their work out there as the market grows.
