Jamell Crouthers Author Bio:
Jamell is a poet, prose author, blogger and podcaster who has taken on a journey of writing in the prime of his life. He has been writing since the age of 13 but never thought he could utilize his talent to tell stories and write books. He is not the traditional author as he writes his books in prose format with a focus on storylines and social issues.
His goals and plans are to continue writing books on taboo subjects that aren’t discussed enough in today’s world and bringing those main subjects to the forefront. Jamell’s blogs and podcasts focus on how he writes his books, his journey as an author and some motivational blogs that will get you to focus on your goals. His goal and moniker is, “to change the world, one book at a time.”
What inspires you to write?
What inspires me to write are all of the social issues that are going on in the world. From homelessness to domestic violence, drug and alcohol addictions, the inner cities of America, men's and women's mental health and so many more subjects, I feel that these stories need to be written and told. It's time that we start having serious conversations about what's going on around us.
Tell us about your writing process.
I am definitely someone who outlines every book. I do brainstorming sessions and write out character names, chapter layout (sometimes I condense chapters), sometimes I write what I want to discuss in the chapter so it's easier to write when I sit down to type things out (I do share pictures of my notes on my blogs for 'Book Insight Friday').
One pair of headphones need to be charged, I turn on lofi music and I am off and running. Most of my writing gets done on my iPad these days (I have the case and keyboard combo) and it's lighter than carrying my laptop.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
When I'm writing my characters, I'm living in their shoes at that moment. I'm processing and speaking from their perspective in my mind. I'm telling their story and doing it with empathy and compassion to where it's relatable to the readers and/or listener.
Who are your favorite authors?
Wow, okay I have a few so here's my list:
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
1984 and Animal Farm by George Orwell
Brainwashed by Tom Burrell
Evicted by Matthew Desmomd
Real American by Julie Lythcott-Haims
The Assassination of Fred Hampton by Jeffrey Haas
Those are a few of so many great books I've read.
What genres do you write?
Fiction, Social Issues, Police Procedural, Mental Health, Domestic Violence, Drunk Driving, and many more
How did you choose the genre(s) you write?
I chose the genres I write in due to watching the world and what's going on around me. I started with focusing on men's issues and a few others, then it progressed to drunk driving, America, domestic violence and many others. The big one was telling stories about the school shootings (Kids With Guns series) and then my book series on the inner cities of America (Alphabet City series).
What three things are on your writing desk at any given moment?
Definitely my iPad, my notebook and pens. I always have my sports drink Bodyarmor, I need that for sure. As long as I have those, I'm good to go!
What hobbies do you have when you need a break from writing?
I have quite a few, reading, writing poetry, swimming, bike riding, playing basketball, playing pool, and writing documentaries on social issues.
What formats are your books in?
eBook, Print, Audiobook
