Author Bio:
From a small town in South Central Texas, living on a ranch in between four other ranches, I use the scenic views outside my office window to inspire my writing. With a large family, the quiet and solitude of the space we live in becomes quiet as all head off to work or school. That’s when I create. Writing is my passion and I do it every day.
What inspires you to write?
Reading is what normally inspires me to write. I love to read the latest stories and come up with my own. Once in a while an idea will come to me spontaneously and sometimes I wake up from a dream and have to write down the gist of it.
Tell us about your writing process.
I use several methods of writing. I have written by the seat of my pants with no outline or idea of what the story was going to be. I just write and see where the characters take the story. This is the most fun way to write, but the story can go on and on so it’s not a way to write when on a deadline. When I have a deadline I make an outline and then get to work using word limits for the whole project and for each chapter. That way I am sure to meet my deadline. Another way I write is when I have an inspiration, an idea or a dream. I write the story freehand then use that short story to create a long version of it.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
My characters are as real to me as a real living breathing person. I get into their heads and get to know them. How they look, act, and feel I try to keep consistent with an actual person. When a book or series is finished I often find myself still thinking about the characters. I often include past characters into new stories, just to be able to visit them again.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have my classic authors I love, like Emily Bronte, and my contemporary classic horror authors like Stephen King. My current favorite author who I immediately get her books as soon as I possibly can and read them nonstop until I’m finished is Tracy Brogan. Her stories are funny and insightful and down right entertaining. She has one historical romance and the rest are contemporary romances and I love every single one of them.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I went the self-publishing route with my first five novels. This is a tough road though and I am now looking for an agent and a traditional publisher. I went with self-publishing in the first place because I wanted to see my finished product so bad it seemed the fastest way to get there. And self-publishing works for a lot of people. Great marketers sell lots of books. I ghost-write for a few people and they self-publish the work and quiet a few are always on the Best Seller charts on Amazon, so I know if you have what it takes you can sell books on your own. But be prepared to work a lot on marketing your book.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
The future for book publishing is exciting right now. You have many ways to get a story out to the masses now. You have fan sites where writers write and people read for free. This helps writers learn what works and what doesn’t. The future looks promising to me and I love how acceptable it is to write the way one wants to instead of the usual set of rules writers were required to write their story by.
