Emmy Vine Author Bio:
I grew up in NY, the middle of 5 children. My head was always in the clouds; I spent all my school hours with a book under a desk. In high school, with four years looming ahead, I decided to write a book. Damian’s story began when I was in 11th grade, but took a very long hiatus–through law school, various jobs, and a bunch of kids of my own. Today, I live in NJ with a husband, children and a very cute, obnoxious little dog who hates everyone but me.
What inspires you to write?
I hadn't written for years before writing this novel. What inspired me was my character Damian. He sat within me for years, patiently waiting, but he had a story to tell.
Tell us about your writing process.
A combination of both. I outlined the novel as far as overall plot, so I knew the direction it needed to go in and it kept me very focused on the goal. The individual scenes were more seat of the pants; I like to follow the energy of my characters.
I tried working with special software, but in the end I found them overwhelming. Basic Word for me! The problem for me, though, with not using software intended for writers is that it allowed me to get away with not being super detailed. For example, software asks you to list all the character traits, the way they walk, quirks, etc. So I skipped that at the beginning but ended up forgetting what I'd written earlier, so I'd have to go back and check.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Ooh this is my favorite. I watch my characters-I become my characters. I hear their thoughts and conversations, I feel their guilt and anxieties. As I fall asleep at night, they're keeping me company. It's like a great movie-what's gonna happen next?? And sometimes, when I'm writing a scene, they go rogue and I end up with something I completely didn't intend. When that happens, it's like magic. I have to let them guide me.
Who are your favorite authors?
It really depends on what I'm in the mood for.
Abby Jimenez is always a good read, Susan Elizabeth Phillips–the usual suspects. Anything, really, with a good, well-written story with characters you can fall in love with.
What genres do you write?
Women's Fiction, Romance, Fiction
How did you choose the genre(s) you write?
I love when you really get to know a character. That, combined with a heavier topic, made women's fiction seem like the logical choice.
What three things are on your writing desk at any given moment?
My writing desk is my bed–definitely not the most professional!
What hobbies do you have when you need a break from writing?
I love CrossFit and painting.
What formats are your books in?
eBook, Print
