Author Bio:
I am an award-winning writer of books and screenplays, and a TV and film director and producer. My latest book is Kill Code: A Dystopian Science Fiction Novel. It is the first of a trilogy. I have also worked for major broadcasters and studios on a wide variety of successful projects in the US, UK, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East. I live in Miami with my wife, my teenage daughter, and a cat called Louis.
What inspires you to write?
Inspiration takes many forms, and often for me, it's not instant. I will have an idea and mull over it for months, even years. The inspiration for Kill Code and the trilogy wasn't difficult though. I just looked at the world around me and decided I had to write about what could happen to us all.
Tell us about your writing process.
My background is in screenwriting, where every word is important and a strong storyline is essential. So I have taken that experience and applied it to my book writing. I first develop a really clear storyline idea, and then, before starting the book plot as much of it as possible. Only after this do I get down to the book writing.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Because of the way I write – mapping out the story before I start – I have a good idea early on of my characters. However, the characters do sometimes take over and lead me on a path I had not planned.
Who are your favorite authors?
I go hot and cold on authors and it really depends on whether the blurb on their latest book catches my attention. But, for light pulp fiction reading, you can't beat Elmore Leonard. However, I don't think it's likely I'm going to see any new books from him since he died a few years ago.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I self-published my first three books, but this time around decided to try and find a publisher. I wanted someone who knew more about marketing than me – which wasn't difficult since at the time I knew nothing and had not really pushed any of my books. I chose TCK Publishing because they really liked Kill Code, and they seemed to have a grasp on the marketing process.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think increasingly authors have had to become marketers. So effectively we are now all warketeers. This combined with the acceptance that self-publishing is no longer considered simply vanity writing means that authors can and do choose between self-publishing, publishing with a small flexible publishing house, or going with a traditional big publisher. Which route is chosen seems to depend on how much control you want to retain over the sale of your book.
What genres do you write?
Science Fiction, Dystopian, Action-Adventure, Teens and Young Adult, Thrillers, Conspiracy
What formats are your books in?
