What inspires you to write?
I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t making up stories in my head. My ideas come from just about everywhere, from newspapers to conversations overhead in a restaurant. Inspiration is all around me!
Tell us about your writing process.
I’m a pantster, meaning I don’t plot my stories. Once an idea stews for awhile the characters slowly begin to come to life and they more or less tell the story. Oftentimes it’s like riding a roller-coaster. You never know what’s around the next bend, all you can do is hold on for dear life.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Always! I often get strange looks while waiting at a red light because scenes play out in my mind. So I won’t forget them, I use a mini tape recorder to record my thoughts or a conversation taking place between my characters. I think the most frustrating is when they wake me up in the middle of the night, but those are usually my best scenes.
What advice would you give other writers?
Just write! It takes patience and hard work but if you stay focused, write everyday, you can make it happen.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I started out querying the traditional publishers and literary agencies but ended up going with smaller publishers because you have more control of your work and the royalties are better. It’s a better fit for me.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think the ebook industry will continue to grow. Personally, I prefer reading ebooks but I know everyone doesn’t so I do hope traditional publishers and bookstores continue to prosper also.
