Love meditation, starry nights, rainbows, rain, creating hand made jewellery and taking photographs of anything interesting. Love a good stoush over – comparative religion and politics. I’m a socialist at heart but an entrepreneur by trade.
Cooking hot, curries is my relaxation along with eating them. I love beach walks, storm watching and seeing the full moon rise over the ocean. AND I love and live to write!
What inspires you to write?
Writing is a kind of meditation for me. I can get lost in it. Once I get into the flow, I know anything is possible. As I can create a complex story from a simple idea, so we can create anything we want in life.
Tell us about your writing process.
I begin with a simple idea, and just start writing. I simply see what unfolds as I go. Once I get into the ‘zone’, that space between thoughts, it just comes to me. Then I sit back and read through what I have written the next day. That then inspires me where to take the plot. Like for The Day My Mother Murdered Herself, one of my dear friends, her mother actually comitted suicide while she was home. She was only 15. She would never speak of it. So I pondered what would make someone do it, and how would it affect the person who found them afterwards? That’s where the similarity ends. The rest is completely made up.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I simply become immersed in the main character. I tend to write from the point of view of the main protagonist.
What advice would you give other writers?
Just sit down and write. Don’t judge yourself or get too precious about it. Write as much as you can and don’t read back over it until the end of the day or the next day. Don’t get caught up in editing as you go. Just get the story out, and go back over it later.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to self pubish. I’m a control freak! I wanted 100% say over the book cover and the editing. I created the book covers and did my own formatting. I don’t want someone to water down my writing to suit a fad or someone else’s idea of what’s good or not. My writing is what it is. Like it or not. You, the reader will decide!
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I’m excited about the future. All hail the indie author!
