Tell us about yourself.
My name is Michael Colon born and raised in New York City. I am a novelist and a freelance writer. My author's story is about hard work, perseverance, and believing in the power of imagination. My inspiration comes from various societal abnormalities, the beauty in cultural differences, and my own life experiences. Outside of writing I enjoy working out, watching sports, and going on hiking trails with my wife.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Bronx, NY. Being exposed to various cultures and art form in the Bronx at an early age opened my mind quickly to various walks of life. This influenced my writing freaky based on my personal upbringing at home and what I saw in my environment.
What was your journey to getting published like?
This is a great question. It was definitely a test of character but also a fun journey of learning and sharpening my craft. Of course there was lots of rejections on the journey but I never took it personal. I knew in my heart that this journey to getting published was going to lead to other paths to walk. If you knock on the door long enough eventually it opens.
What’s the best piece of feedback you’ve ever received?
I wouldn’t say I had one best piece of feedback. All the feedback I received motivated me to do better and try harder.
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Advice I would give aspiring writer is to be be open ti telling your work here and there but belonging in the core concept of it. There will be rejection but you have to keep working hard and believing in yourself.
What’s a fun fact about you that your readers might not know?
I played semi professional basketball for a couple years.
What’s your guilty pleasure book or genre?
I don’t think I have a guilty pleasure book or genre.
When you’re not writing, how do you like to spend your time?
I like to workout. Go to the movies. Trial hike with my wife. Play basketball. And do mini road trips.
What has inspired you and your writing style?
Art, music, and movies influenced my career in writing. The imagination and creative expression that goes into those artforms inspires me. As an author, I see how genuine we must be with our craft to impact the reader with the message we want to deliver and I see the same in those art forms.
How do you deal with negative reviews?
I see negative reviews as someone’s opinion which they have the right to express and have.
How do you connect with your readers?
I Cincy with my readers through social media and making sure my art form is as genuinely me as possible.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I am working on a sequel to my sci-fi book, The Gift From Aelius.
Are there any Easter eggs or hidden messages in your work?
There is a character in the book named Michael. I added him in with my name as a small water egg since we share the same first name.
How do you approach writing dialogue for your characters?
I let the characters do the writing. When I am in the flow of writing a story. I let the fictional world the characters live in have power by guiding the narratives. This takes letting go of rigid writing habits and letting the characters have fun. You never know what exciting new ideas can propel the story by doing this.
