Tell us about yourself.
I'm a book lover. I love reading books. I read an average of 2-3 new books a month. Okay, I get it. I am supposed to answer this question from the perspective of an author. I am the founder of Investornomy; a company that focuses on teaching entrepreneurs how to diversify their revenue or personal income through stock investing.
I am the author of 'Stock Market Mama', a book focused on teaching women the foundation of stock investing.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Though I am currently a Canadian, I spent my childhood days in Nigeria. My parents alway made us to read books. Most importantly, my late dad loved reading books. After I graduated from High school, my brother introduced me to finance books and philosophy books. Reading them changed my mindset about money and I started saving and investing as early as my first year in the university.
Fast forward to adulthood, I know that information documented and published as a book has the capacity to reach he ends of the earth and cause transformation in the minds of readers. This is why I think that authors are heroes.
Now, I write because I know that my book has the capacity to change lives.
What was your journey to getting published like?
I went the route of self-publishing. It was a lot of learning. Luckily, my team helped out a lot. If you turn back the hands of the clock, I will do it again because it was fun too.
What’s the best piece of feedback you’ve ever received?
The best piece of advice I always remind myself of is "love your neighbour like yourself". Why? For me, it is easier to love people and to solve problems for people. So it becomes easy to spread myself too thin and that is not stainable. The advice helps me to keep things balanced.
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
If you want to write, just do it. It may be a "bad book", but it will still be a book. You don't have to write only one book your entire life. So, write the first one. Then, take the experience and the feedback to energize you to write the second book. The more you write, the better you will get at it.
What’s a fun fact about you that your readers might not know?
I graduated with distinctions from Dental School and broke a 40 years academic record. Surprisingly, I was not the typical bookworm. I managed to break the academic record while travelling to several countries for extra curricular activities during my days in Dental School. I was atypical.
What’s your guilty pleasure book or genre?
I love to read books written by dead people. Oh no, not like that. I just love to trace knowledge to the inventors of the concepts, and most times, those writers are already dead by the time I discover them. Ha-ha-ha.
What’s your favorite quote about writing?
{“Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts. You need to start somewhere.” by Anne Lamott
When you’re not writing, how do you like to spend your time?
When I am not writing, I am reading. I read lots of books and have a big library. For me, reading is like treasure hunting; sometimes you find gold in form of actionable tips.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
It will either be "Our husbands has gone mad again" or 'The Landlady". These were my early childhood days. All I can remember is that the stories where short and memorable.
What has inspired you and your writing style?
My experiences with reading lots of books inspire my writing style. When I read, I look forward to finding an actionable tip. So, when I write, I want every chapter to be an actionable tip. I want a reader to find lots of treasures. This is why I write self-help books.
How do you deal with negative reviews?
Every review is a gift including the negative ones. If you can peel off the emotions from a negative review, you will find something you can work on to get better on your next book. I don't wish for negative reviews but I embrace them when they show up.
How do you connect with your readers?
Mostly online through my social media pages.
What’s next for you as a writer?
It's a secret. Okay, let me give you whisper it to you. I am currently writing a new book.
Are there any Easter eggs or hidden messages in your work?
No. I want every reader to grasp the actionable tips without missing any. So, I refrain from hiding them.
How do you approach writing dialogue for your characters?
I make the assumption that I am speaking to one reader. Then I write like I am talking to that one reader. For example, for my book 'Stock Market Mama" which was written for women, that one reader was my younger sister. So, the characters in my mind when I was writing the book were "me" and "Cathy".
If you could share one thing with your fans, what would that be?
I would love to read your review after you read Stock Market Mama.
