What inspires you to write?
My inspiration comes from my senses. Whatever I see, touch, taste or smell. I've found inspiration from things as simple and pleasant as observing an elderly couple holding hands as they cross the street. I'll start to wonder what their lives were like growing up and how they met.
Tell us about your writing process.
I'm totally freestyle when it comes to writing. I usually have a general idea of what I want to write about, but often times the story takes on a life of its own.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I allow my characters to talk to me and tell me their story so that it's authentic. If I'm creating a scene, I may want a certain action to happen, but the character will remind me that that's not who they are, make this happen instead.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have so many, but I have a great respect for those who paved the way for African American authors. Omar Three, Terry McMillan, Connie Briscoe, Alice Walker, Margaret Johnson-Hodge, J. California Cooper, Carl Weber, and the list goes on.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to self-publish so that i could control my own destiny.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think self-publishing is no longer looked down upon. There are quality writers out there who simply got tired of waiting for traditional publishing conpanies rejecting their talents. Many self publishers have started their own publishing companies and are doing great. I think the independent publishing has made traditional publishing houses take notice, and they should. The world deserves to hear new voices in the book industry, and it's time to blow away the dust of old-fashion criteria and give these new voices a chance to be a part of their team. If not, we will continue to progress ourselves.
What genres do you write?
I write multiple genres because I dont believe that creativity is limited to just one. In particular, family saga, romance, comedy, inspirational, sports, and non-fiction.
